Legacy of KartridgPak

Celebrating the Legacy of KartridgPak: 81 Years of Innovation

The KartridgPak brand has been a cornerstone of packaging technology for over eight decades. From its beginnings as a prototype developed by Oscar Mayer researchers in 1944 to the global launch of the latest KartridgPak CH-70 machine in January 2025, KartridgPak has continually set the standard for efficiency, reliability, and innovation in packaging solutions.

As we celebrate 81 years since the creation of the first KartridgPak prototype, we also look forward to the debut of the CH-70, a machine that embodies the brand’s legacy and its vision for the future.

From Prototype to Industry Leader: The Early Days of KartridgPak

The KartridgPak story began when Oscar Mayer researchers sought more innovative ways to package perishable products. In 1944, they developed the first prototype of what would later become the KartridgPak chub machine. This initial step laid the groundwork for a revolution in packaging, introducing the chub package - a versatile, efficient, and low cost packaging solution for food and industrial products.

In 1950, the KartridgPak Machine Company was officially founded in Chicago, Illinois. Engineers and designers refined the prototype, transforming it into a commercial machine that met the rigorous demands of food processors. Recognizing the need for growth in 1952, the company relocated to Davenport, Iowa, to what is now a present day R.A Jones facility.

Milestones in Innovation: A Legacy of Excellence

Throughout its history, KartridgPak has been at the forefront of technological innovation. In 1953, the company patented automatic linking and stripping technologies, enabling faster and more precise packaging processes. These advancements established KartridgPak as a trusted partner for food processors looking to optimize their production lines.

The 1960’s marked a period of diversification as KartridgPak extended its expertise into industrial markets. With the 1965 acquisition by Dow Chemical, the company began manufacturing packaging solutions for products such as glue and resin, expanding beyond its food industry origins. This period of growth and innovation continued in 1977 with the launch of the Anyl-Ray Fat Analyzer, a revolutionary device that enhanced the accuracy of meat processing by determining fat content.

Ownership changes in the following decades brought new opportunities for collaboration and growth. Barry-Wehmiller International acquired KartridgPak in 1988, followed by R.A Jones in 1997. These acquisitions united two leaders in packaging machinery, with the KartridgPak brand eventually moving under R.A Jones’s umbrella. This synergy allowed KartridgPak to expand its global reach and enhance its product offerings. In 2012, both brands became part of Coesia, a global leader in industrial and packaging solutions. Still under Coesia’s leadership, KartridgPak and R.A Jones have been solidified as pioneers in the industry.

Engineered for Reliability: The Hallmarks of KartridgPak Machines

Since its inception, KartridgPak has been synonymous with reliability and precision. The brand has established itself as a trusted partner for food and industrial packaging by setting the standard with features like superior film registration and weight control, which ensure consistent product quality. The unique metal clips formed from a spool of wire also provides a cost-effective alternative to preformed clip solutions, offering both economic and operational advantages.

Other standout features include a simplified clipping head, stainless steel construction for enhanced durability, and multiple sealing options, such as heat, radio frequency, and extruder sealing. The machine also incorporates film drive registration and improved voiding systems, further optimizing efficiency and product quality. These innovations streamline production and contribute to greater cost savings for customers.

Introducing the KartridgPak CH-70: The Future of Chub Packaging

As KartridgPak celebrates its rich history, it also looks to the future with the launch of the CH-70 at the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) in January 2025. This latest-generation machine exemplifies the brand’s dedication to continuous improvement and technological advancement.

The CH-70 is a mid-speed chub machine designed to meet the needs of mid-volume producers. Its compact footprint makes it ideal for facilities seeking high performance without sacrificing valuable production space. Engineered with precision and practicality in mind, the CH-70 features in-line continuous motion clipping, rollstock clips and film, and advanced PLC controls for seamless operation.

A Legacy of Innovation, A Future of Possibilities

As we reflect on 81 years of KartridgPak’s history, it is clear that the brand’s success is rooted in its unwavering commitment to quality, reliability, and innovation. From the early days of Oscar Mayer’s prototype to the global launch of the CH-70, KartridgPak has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible in packaging technology. Since 1950, over 1,000 KartridgPak machines have been installed globally, a testament to the brand’s impact and trustworthiness in the industry.

The debut of the CH-70 at IPPE 2025 marks a new chapter in this storied legacy. With its advanced features and proven performance, the CH-70 is poised to set new standards in chub packaging, offering unmatched reliability and profitability for manufacturers worldwide. As KartridgPak continues to innovate, it remains proof of R.A Jones’s vision, expertise, and dedication in shaping the future of packaging.
